Electrical Certification Made Simple for Auckland Homes and Businesses

Electrical certificates can be confusing, especially when you are not sure which one applies to your installation. Legacy Electrical works with homeowners, landlords and businesses across Auckland to make the entire process clear and stress free.

This page explains the main electrical certificates used in Auckland. If you prefer to talk things through, the team at Legacy Electrical is always happy to help.

We provide all major electrical certificates and inspections including Energy Works Certificates, Electrical Warrants of Fitness, Certificates of Compliance, Electrical Safety Certificates, Certificates of Verification, Records of Inspection and Thermal Imaging Inspections.

Energy Works Certificate

Many people hear the term Energy Works Certificate from insurers or council staff, but it is actually a broad reference to electrical documentation rather than a single certificate. The specific certificate you need depends on your installation and the work completed.

Legacy Electrical helps you determine the correct paperwork quickly, whether you are dealing with an insurer, undergoing renovations or getting electrical work signed off. If you are unsure what type of Energy Works Certificate applies to your situation, we can guide you through the options.

Electrical Warrant of Fitness

Some types of buildings and vehicles require an Electrical Warrant of Fitness. This includes caravans, food trucks, portable structures and particular commercial setups. The WOF confirms that the electrical system is safe, compliant and suitable for use.

Legacy Electrical inspects outlets, safety devices, wiring and overall condition. Once everything meets the required standard, we issue the updated WOF and keep your installation compliant. If your current warrant is nearing expiry or you need one for a newly purchased structure, we can carry out the assessment promptly.

Certificate of Compliance

A Certificate of Compliance is issued whenever general risk electrical work is completed, such as new wiring, mains work, switchboard upgrades, additions or renovations. The certificate confirms that the work meets Auckland safety regulations and has been completed by a licensed professional. Legacy Electrical provides Certificates of Compliance for residential and commercial projects, ensuring that your work is recorded properly for future reference, insurance requirements and council approvals.

Most new electrical installations will require a Certificate of Compliance.

Electrical Safety Certificate

An Electrical Safety Certificate confirms that newly installed or modified electrical work has been tested, connected and verified as safe to use. It is commonly issued for low risk work including maintenance, replacements and basic repairs.

Legacy Electrical supplies ESCs for both stand alone jobs and projects that also require a Certificate of Compliance. The ESC must be issued within 20 days of connection, and our team ensures this is completed accurately and on time.

Certificate of Verification

A Certificate of Verification is used when the existing electrical installation needs to be checked before it can be reconnected or accepted by insurers. This certificate is often needed when:

  • No previous documentation exists
  • An insurer asks for proof of electrical condition
  • The installation has been disconnected for more than six months
  • There are concerns about age, damage or unsafe DIY work

Legacy Electrical follows the AS NZS 3019 standard to assess the condition of the installation and confirm whether it is safe and compliant before issuing the certificate.

This document is especially valuable for older homes, rural buildings and properties with uncertain electrical histories.

Our Expert Electricians in Auckland

A Record of Inspection is required for high risk electrical work. Examples include mains supply work, overhead service lines, solar installations and parallel generation systems. These jobs must be inspected by an independent electrical inspector. Legacy Electrical issues the Certificate of Compliance for the work, and the inspector issues the Record of Inspection once the installation is confirmed as safe and correct.

Both certificates are needed for high risk work to be fully certified. The inspection details are also recorded in Energy Safety’s high risk database.

Whether you are organising the work for your own property or you are an electrician who needs a job inspected, we can arrange an ROI without hassle.

Thermal Imaging Inspection

A thermal imaging inspection is one of the most accurate ways to detect electrical faults before they become hazards. Our specialised thermal cameras identify heat signatures that indicate loose connections, overloaded circuits or components that are beginning to fail.

Legacy Electrical provides thermal imaging inspections for homes, rental properties, commercial buildings and industrial sites. This service is ideal for:

Preventive maintenance
Insurance assessments
Early identification of electrical faults
Safety checks for long term property protection

The inspection is quick, non invasive and highly effective. You will receive a detailed report with images and recommendations for any issues discovered.

Why These Certificates Matter

Electrical certificates are more than formal paperwork. They confirm that work has been completed safely, they protect property owners, and they help ensure you comply with Auckland regulations. Legacy Electrical issues certificates that meet the expectations of councils, insurers and regulatory bodies. With the right documentation in place, you avoid delays, complications and unnecessary risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Legacy Electrical can review your installation and work out the exact document required based on the type of job and level of risk.

Only licensed electricians and registered electrical inspectors can issue official certificates. Legacy Electrical meets all certification requirements and provides full documentation.

Certificates do not usually have a formal expiry, but they only reflect the condition at the time of inspection. Older installations may require updated checks.

Many homeowners request thermal imaging as part of preventive maintenance. It is a reliable way to locate hidden faults early and reduce long term risks.

Some jobs require both. The COC covers the completed work. The ESC confirms it is safe to connect and use.

Legacy Electrical can complete a Certificate of Verification to confirm the condition of the installation and provide official records moving forward.
